Glossary

Blepharoplasty A procedure to remove unsightly fat, usually along with excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids.  Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below the eyes--features that make a person look older and more tired than they feel and can interfere with vision.

Botox Treatment
This popular procedure erases the wrinkles of time. A purified form of Clostridium botulinum bacteria is injected into the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. As the muscle weakens, the overlying skin relaxes and wrinkles begin to soften away.

Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery
In addition to correction of lip, palate, nose and facial structures, cleft lip and palate procedures can reduce or eliminate hearing and speech difficulties that may accompany such anomalies.

Craniofacial Implants
Sometimes a person’s ability to speak, swallow, or chew depends on maxillofacial prosthesis. Cranial implants or artificial parts for the face area may be needed for cosmetic or health reasons.

Forehead Brow Lift
This procedure can correct drooping eyebrows and result in natural, arched brows that help frame the eyes. A lift can also correct a poor forehead brow that may cause or contribute to impaired upward vision.

Implants For Permanent Tooth Replacement
Dental implants are the newest and most permanent way to replace missing teeth.  Implants are artificial teeth roots that are surgically placed into the jawbone, creating a foundation for the replacement tooth.

Laser Skin Resurfacing
Most commonly used to minimize the appearance of fine lines, especially around the mouth and the eyes. However, it can be very effective in treating facial scars or areas of uneven pigmentation as well as tightening loose skin.

Lipectomy
Also known as liposuction or liposculpture. This technique is used to sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body. Maxillofacial Procedures Includes the diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of disease, injuries, and defects involving both functional and aesthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and facial region.

Neck Lift
Improves the overall appearance of the face and neck by tightening underlying muscles in the neck, removing excess fat accumulated over the years and tightening the skin and neck.

Otoplasty
A procedure that changes the appearance of the external ear. This is most commonly performed for protruding ears and, in some cases, can improve hearing capability.

Orthognathic Surgery
Needed when jaws don’t meet correctly and/or teeth don’t seem to fit with jaws. Teeth are straightened with orthodontics, and corrective jaw surgery repositions misaligned jaws. This not only improves facial appearance, but also ensures that teeth meet correctly and function properly.

Rhinoplasty
Surgery to reshape the nose is one of the most common of all cosmetic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the appearance of your nose, change the shape of the tip or bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It may also correct a birth defect or injury or help relieve some breathing problems.

Rhytidectomy
This facelift procedure improves overall facial appearance by tightening supporting tissues over underlying muscles in the face. Excess fat accumulated over the years is removed and the skin covering the face and neck is also tightened. In many cases, a facelift procedure is done in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures such as eyelid surgery, eyebrow lifts, or chin tucks.

Wisdom Teeth Removal
Procedures for extraction of wisdom teeth for health or cosmetic reasons.
